CRISTÓBAL SOLER: REHEARSING HINDEMITH
With Castelló Symphony Orchestra
Invited by the Castelló Symphony Orchestra, Cristóbal Soler is rehearsing Paul Hindemith ´s Symphony Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter) composed while Hindemith was working on the preliminary stages of the opera of the same title. It was commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker and conductor Wilhelm Fürtwangler who asked him to write a symphony to perform on a concert tour.
The symphony is structured in three movements related to three pictures by Matthias Grünewald: Engelkonzert (
Angelic Concert); Grablegung ( Entombment) and Versuchung des heiligen Antonius (The Temptaions of St. Anthony), which correspond to the overture and two orchestral interludes for the upcoming opera.
The premiere took place in 1934, in Berlin and later in New York, conducted by Otto Klemperer. However, due to the rejection of the nazi government, the opera could not be staged in Berlin and was premiered later, in Zürich, in 1938.
